For those of you who do not know, one of my goals is to watch as many series of anime as i can over the summer. so, while school was still in, i scoured the Internet websites best for watching anime; these included:
AnimeCrazy:
[link]Kumby:

[link]One of the series that i watched was entitled
Rental Magica, only spanning 24 episodes.
I was intrigued by the first episode. For those unfamiliar with the story, here's the basic blurb, taken from Kumby: "Due to his fathers disappearance, Itsuki Iba has to take over the family business: a magician dispatch service called Astral. Astral basically employ countless magicians and other supernatural beings in order to send them out to help those who need magical assistance. As a leader, Itsuki now has to be tough, commanding, and reliable, but theres one problem, hes a coward. Also, in order to run a successful business, he has to connect with his employees, which is more difficult than it seems due to his personality and lack of magical ability. But not only does he have to deal with his own employees, he also has to deal with those who threaten the family business."
Sounds pretty interesting, eh? But that blurb does not give away too much, so i will tell you the clincher: Itsuki does indeed have some sort of magical ability known as Glam Sight. I will not say too much here without revealing too much of the main plot, but that thing is very cool.
Itsuki's Glam Sight operates much like Yuugi's Sennen Puzzle in Yu-Gi-Oh!, giving him the wek points in any and all opponents that he and his employees face. It brings out, i think, his true disposition and desire to want to lead and remain as acting President of Astral. Also, it makes his voice sound gruff and sexy! XD But there is a catch to this power that i thought was very different from other elements of its kind in anime: it's a cursed thing. he was born with the Glam Sight itself, but when he was a child, he defended one of his friends from a monster and his eye and its powers were cursed. how that affected him later in life, when he actually had need to use the Glam Sight, was that every time he did use it, it would cause the curse to be stronger, thus making him more vulnerable to the curse--i think. ><
That is where the series lacked just a tad. It is a very Japanese anime, meaning that a LOT of old traditions and rituals of Japan are used and talked about in this anime. This is not a bad thing; in fact, i thought it was a very good thing, but for a person not familiar with Japanese culture--ancient culture, that is--it may be difficult to follow at times what exactly is happening. I was obviously able to get the gist of general ideas, but the meanings behind them were a little lost to me. Clearly, thsi anime caters to almost a very strict Japanese demographic.
That's not to say the anime wasn't enjoyable because I thoroughly enjoyed it, and anyone who loves anime and fantasy and Japanese traditions and different types of magic and religions would probably enjoy this anime.
The characters are fantastic. May top three, out of quite an array of characters mind you, are Itsuki, Honami and Fin. Itsuki is, of course, the protagonist of the series, and there is something very sweet about him. He is very naive when it concerns magic, but he has a great desire to learn about it to further his role as President of Astral. That's where Honami comes in; she and Itsuki are childhood friends and a witch specializing in Celtic magic. She studied hard to be the best in her witch academy class and to halp Itsuki throughout his life. Can't say too much more about here without spoilers. Come to think of it, can't say too much about Fin Kruder without spioiling too much because he doesn't come in till the third to last episode, which is sad because they could have really explored his character a lot more. Also, a super special awesome plot twist was revealed about him in the second to last episode (i think....).
Basically, what I am trying to say is go watch 'Rental Magica.' it is a great, enjoyable, fun, and suspenseful anime that I thoroughly enjoyed. However, know this: the episodes are not presented in chronological order.
Now then, I shall go back to watching
The Prince of Tennis, of which i have only watched three minutes. XD
